A man's dog was stabbed to death during an attempted robbery in the Mission early Friday morning, police Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The 20-year-old victim and his dog, a pit bull, were walking in the area of 22nd and Bartlett streets about 3:15 a.m. when he was confronted by two men in their 20s, Shyy said.

One of the heartless crooks grabbed the victim's dog and the other suspect brandished a knife. The victim and the suspects began arguing and the suspects released the dog and fled the scene on foot.

The victim was uninjured but discovered that his dog had been stabbed, police said.

Officers arrived to the scene and took the victim and his dog to a nearby animal hospital in the 600 block of Alabama Street where it succumbed to its injuries, Shyy said.

No arrests have been made.
