by Jonah Owen LambAt a community meeting about the fatal police shooting of a carjacking suspect in the Financial District early Thursday morning, Police Chief Greg Suhr said that all evidence points to the officers acting in accordance with department protocol.
"I haven't seen anything that would tell me it's not," he said, adding that the incident is under investigation.
According to police, six officers shot and killed Giovany Contreras-Sandoval, 34, of San Rafael after he threatened police and onlookers. He was shot six times at the scene on California and Sutter streets at around 6 a.m. Thursday.
The six officers who opened fire to protect themselves and bystanders collectively fired 32 rounds, according to police. Contreras-Sandoval's revolver, an antique Russian-made gun, had two unspent rounds in it after the incident.
After carjacking a woman in Richmond and leading law enforcement on a three-county, high-speed chase, the suspect crashed the Cadillac Escalade he was driving and then began firing his pistol at bystanders attempting to help him out of the SUV.
Contreras-Sandoval drove the wrong way up Battery Street and caused a three-car accident after eluding San Francisco police.
When several bystanders approached his upended Escalade, he started firing at them. One was struck by what may have been a bullet fragment but was not seriously injured.
Police recovered a round from the pistol that went through the window of an 11th-story office.
Contreras-Sandoval is the 34th person killed by San Francisco police since 2000.
Thursday's shooting was the 92nd shooting incident since 2000 involving police and the sixth this year.
