A group of San Francisco Bay commercial herring fishermen are suing PG&E over claims that the utility giant’s refineries that operated along The City’s northern waterfront more than a century ago contaminated surrounding waters and land.
The complaint, a precursor to a lawsuit, was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It alleges PG&E dumped massive quantities of toxic chemicals from its manufactured gas plants in the late 1800s and early 1900s into what is now the Marina district and Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood.
PG&E allegedly has known about the contamination at least since the 1970s, but has failed to clean up the area.
The chemicals have contaminated large swaths of herring spawning habitat in the Bay and more than 50 acres of residential and tourist areas in The City, the complaint states.
