Police said a man who died this morning in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood shot himself after shooting a woman following a series of overnight domestic incidents.

The man has not been identified. The woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Police said officers responded about 5 a.m. to multiple 911 calls in reference to a shooting at an apartment in the 500 block of Natoma Street across from Seventh Street.

Responding officers arrived at the apartment and located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and died at the scene.

Police said they received multiple calls for service at the residence throughout the previous night.

Police responded to domestic disturbance calls at the residence Thursday at 8:30, 9:15 and 10 p.m., and arrested the suspect on suspicion of public intoxication.

Police said the suspect was booked into the San Francisco County Jail and was released.

Around 4 a.m., police responded to another disturbance at the building and located the suspect, who said he wanted to retrieve his belongings from the apartment.

Police said officers remained at the scene as the victim let the suspect into the apartment to get his belongings, and officers watched the suspect later leave the apartment.

Police said the man returned to the building around 5 a.m., forced entry into the apartment and shot the woman.

Police are still investigating the incident and how the suspect obtained the gun used in the shooting.

Police said the suspect was arrested for domestic violence in 2012, but the case was dismissed.
