by Rob Nagle San Mateo police have made an arrest in the case of a man reportedly acting inappropriately toward two teenage girls on their way to school, Sgt. Rick Decker said Friday.

Gary Fong, 36, of San Francisco was arrested after police conducted a plainclothes operation in and around the campus of San Mateo High School, Decker said.

About 9:30 a.m., officers noticed Fong driving alone in the area around the school in a white four-door sedan. He was pulled over a few blocks away from the school and was positively identified as being the suspect in two previous incidents where two 16-year-old girls were approached outside the school.

A third incident was reported to police by a woman who said she was approached by a man in the parking lot of nearby San Mateo Adult School. Police originally thought there were enough similarities in the incidents and that it may have been the same suspect. However, police now believe the incident at the adult school involved someone else.

That investigation is continuing and police will be releasing a sketch of the suspect soon, Decker said.

Fong was booked on misdemeanor charges of child annoyance and lurking on or about a school campus, Decker said.
