The latest update in the investigation is that the man was reportedly asleep in a sleeping bag near the first block of Sutter Street when he was attacked by a group of people, Gatpandan said. The injuries he sustained are what led to his death.
His identification is not being released at this time due to pending family notification, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Fire Department said Monday that a 911 call came in about an unresponsive person in an alley near Sutter and Montgomery streets about 7:30 a.m. Paramedics arrived at Trinity Place near Hardie Place and found the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are canvassing the area for surveillance footage that may have captured the group responsible for the attack, Gatpandan said. The case is officially considered a homicide, the 37th in San Francisco this year, and the investigation is ongoing.
