by Bay City News A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire with two police officers in South San Francisco early this morning, police said.

Ivan DeJesus Gomez was arrested following an incident that began shortly after 3 a.m. when officers responded to the 600 block of First Lane on reports of gunshots heard in the area, according to police.

While searching the area on foot, the officers were fired upon by a suspect who was apparently hiding from them. The officers returned fire and the suspect ran away toward Spruce Avenue, police said.

Neither the officers or suspect were struck by the gunfire.

Officers from several law enforcement agencies responded to search for the suspect, who was eventually found at about 10:30 a.m. hiding a short distance from the shooting scene and was identified as Gomez, police said.

Police, who told residents in the area to stay indoors during the search for the suspect, have not yet found the weapon used in the shooting.

Gomez was taken to San Mateo County Jail to be booked on suspicion of attempted murder of two police officers, according to police.

South San Francisco police are asking anyone with information about the case to call their criminal investigations bureau at (650) 877-8910. People wishing to remain anonymous can call a tip line at (650) 952-2244.
