Twenty nine people were arrested in Oakland during a protest that started peaceful but later became violent.
Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said starting at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday about 130 people marched in downtown Oakland. The crowd was largely peaceful. Oakland and nearby Berkeley, Calif. have been at the center of many violent protests over the last month following grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers in the deaths of two unarmed black men in Missouri and New York.
Police say on Wednesday night the crowd went from peaceful to violent in about an hour. Protesters tagged buildings, threw bricks and bottles at officers, set off illegal fireworks off and threw trash cans in the streets. Five outside agencies were brought in to help and the arrests were made for various crimes.
