A mountain lion was struck and killed by a car on Interstate Highway 280 in San Bruno on Friday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Officers responded to a report of a mountain lion's body on southbound Highway 280 near Sneath Lane around 8 a.m., CHP Officer Vu Williams said.

Arriving officers found the big cat on the side of the roadway and determined it died after being hit by a car. The car was not at the scene when officers arrived and no witnesses to the collision came forward, Williams said.

Officials from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the scene and removed the deceased mountain lion from the freeway.

Williams estimated that the lion weighed about 75 to 80 pounds.
