Of course politicians of the time played an important role in distorting the facts, as they tried to expand the nation’s foreign footprint and take over Cuba from Spain.
But, nevertheless, Pulitzer’s New York World and Hearst’s many papers would publish the stories. Already of suspect provenance, dispatches would be doctored even more after arriving to editors in the states.
