Update: Driver identified in Bay Bridge truck fire

by Kate Conger Six westbound lanes of Interstate 80, closed this morning after a pickup truck burst into flames just west of the Bay Bridge toll plaza in Oakland, have reopened.

California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to the scene around 8:30 a.m. Upon arriving, they reportedly discovered Romeo Cruz Bautista, a 32-year-old Sacramento resident, behaving erratically.

CHP officers also discovered a vehicle registered to Bautista, a 1998 Ford F-150, engulfed in flames.

According to CHP, Bautista was standing in the traffic lanes and "apparently suffering a medical emergency of a psychiatric nature."

The Oakland Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the truck fire. Bautista was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he is being held under an emergency psychiatric hold and being treated for minor injuries he suffered during the fire.

A Department of Homeland Security officer and a San Francisco police officer were both passing through the toll plaza at the time of the incident and aided CHP with the incident.

The scene was cleared around 8:48 a.m.
