The man arrested in connection with a shooting at a Daly City medical center was committed to Napa State Hospital on Tuesday after the court found him not competent to stand trial in August, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Raymond Iwase, 85, of Daly City had faced charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and had previously been held on $2 million bail in connection with an April 23 incident in which he allegedly shot at a doctor at the Seton Medical Center in Daly City for not treating him properly.
The medical center was evacuated of staff and locked down for hours after Iwase reportedly entered the center armed with a loaded gun and hunted down the doctor.
The doctor reportedly treated Iwase for pain but the pain did not go away, Wagstaffe said. He is alleged to have said to the doctor, “You gave me a shot in the past and you made me sick.”
Iwase allegedly fired a gun at the doctor but missed and then went home, where he was arrested.
In August, doctors for the defense and prosecution both found Iwase not competent to stand trial and the court agreed, Wagstaffe said. On Tuesday, he was committed to Napa State Hospital and the case was continued until Nov. 19 for a status update.
Iwase consented to involuntary administration of medication if doctors deem it necessary, Wagstaffe said.
